Smith Village Supports House Of Hope

For the past 3 years we are proud to have partnered with Froggy 107.7 and Give Local York to Support the House Of Hope in Jacobus. Through food truck events in our parking lot, we not only raised money for House Of Hope, but also provided an enjoyable smorgasbord of delectable lunchtime treats to all who attended. With Froggy 107.7’s musical selections providing entertainment, it was a delightful way to spend an afternoon while supporting a good cause.

House Of Hope is dedicated to bringing hope, healing, and restoration to teenage girls (ages 14-17) and their families who are struggling. We have a unique program that focuses on the family as a whole unit, not just the teen. Our success comes from Christian counseling, education, and the power of Christ’s love.

When relationships become broken, unhealthy behaviors can develop, and our communities suffer. We step in to facilitate the healing process and help families overcome their challenges.

High Point Furniture Market

Imagine a shopping mall the size of an entire town where the only thing being sold is furniture and home décor. That is the closest comparison to what awaits the international buyers, retailers, interior designers and exhibitor personnel who descend on High Point NC twice a year for the world’s largest furniture industry trade show: High Point Furniture Market.

The furniture business has been key to this area of NC for many years due to the abundance of trees. Furniture exhibitions were a logical result and have been occurring here since the early 1900s, growing and culminating into what many long-time attendees call simply “Market.”

It brings billions of dollars of revenue to the state of North Carolina each year from the hotels, restaurants and surrounding airports that service those in attendance. The population of High Point – which is around 118,000 (in 2024) – almost doubles every April and October when attendees descend on the town and its environs to visit showrooms of more than 2000 exhibitors of furniture, wallcovering, rugs, decorative accessories and lighting. Over 11 million square feet of showroom space divided among 180 different buildings display all that is new and exciting. There’s a lot to take in. Although there is a shuttle service available, walking between showrooms and buildings is inevitable so comfortable shoes are a must!

For manufacturers, Market is a testing ground for new product. Not every new style tested in the showrooms will be put into production. Only the top performers will be introduced to a vendor’s line-up.

For buyers, Market offers an opportunity to refresh product lines, see what new styles, colors and technological innovations are trending and to establish and renew business networks.

In addition to visiting showrooms, there are seminars, parties, performances by entertainers, cocktail hours, and tours to fill up the 5 short days. It is a lot of information for everyone to process, and visitors return home full of ideas to implement during the next 6 months… until the next Market when it all begins again.

Sectionals – Build A Custom Seating Group!

Built of individual components, sectional sofas can be designed for most any space.  Although some sectionals will come in only 1 configuration and 1 or 2 fabric choices, many can be custom built specifically for you and your room. If you know the dimensions of your room, you can create your own custom seating group.

Whether you prefer casual or more formal, reclining or stationary, small or large, many options are available to you. Hundreds of fabrics exist, and some vendors even offer a choice of leg styles and stain colors. Many come with occasional pillows that can be ordered in a complementary fabric at no additional charge. Some even offer a choice in seating firmness.

A variety of pieces are available; stationary seats, those that recline, chaise ends, cuddler ends and consoles. Sleepers are available on different models, though not every style offers every option. Many have USB ports and/or charging stations incorporated into the furniture piece itself. Your salesperson can help you narrow down your choices to those best suited to your needs. Pick your favorite and build it for your space!

Room measurements are critical at this point. You don’t want to spend weeks waiting for your custom piece, only to find it doesn’t fit into your room. Make sure that all openings will accommodate the largest piece, usually the wedge. Although certain adjustments can be made to get pieces into your room – such as taking off the legs of a stationary piece, or the back off some reclining pieces – the best way is to measure first and avoid the problem in the first place. Also note window openings, and electrical outlets if any of your pieces have power features.

Before your delivery team leaves, make sure all pieces are locked together to keep the units from separating. Then sit back and enjoy the result of all your careful planning: a beautiful piece of comfortable furniture, tailored to your room and your style.

Decorating Your Home in Farmhouse Style

With the popularity of the HGTV show Fixer Upper, decorating in farmhouse style has become a very popular trend these days. If you love natural, hardy materials and vintage-inspired accessories, this style of interior design could be right for you. Here are some tips for decorating your home in farmhouse style.

  • Matchy-matchy is a no-no: The key to creating a farmhouse look is to make it appear as though the room has evolved over time, even if you bought everything on the same day. All furniture items and accessories should incorporate different materials and be of varying styles. This creates the charm so characteristic of farmhouse style.
  • All the right materials in all the right places: While you can always bend the rules, especially with the eclectic farmhouse style, aim to incorporate wood floors, sliding barn doors, butcher block countertops, painted wood tables, vintage metal and wicker chairs, soft slip-covered sofas, and copper and brass fixtures in your farmhouse style home.
  • Texture, texture everywhere: The cozy, laidback feel of this interior design style is owed in part to the high level of texture. Wood plank or beadboard walls, exposed ceiling beams, open shelving, weathered wood finishes, and vintage textiles like wicker and burlap add graininess and depth to the room. This is exactly what you want when decorating in the farmhouse style.
  • Vintage accessories galore: Do you have some antique family

heirlooms? Display them on floor-to-ceiling shelving to add instant farmhouse character and texture. Even if you don’t have heirlooms, you can shop for vintage accessories to incorporate into your home. Look for antique lamps and light fixtures, old barcarts to display books and tea towels, vintage apple-picking ladders you can convert into bookshelves, and a charming armoire to use as a pantry in your kitchen.

Decorating your home in farmhouse style is a process that may not be possible to complete in one day. Collecting a diverse mix of antique and antique-inspired décor takes time.

As your home design evolves into the farmhouse style, be sure to stop by Smith Village Home Furnishings to help you create the look you’re going for. Ch-ch-changes…

Furniture has become very much a fashion industry in the last decade and a half, what with Pantone’s color of the year, and popular tones for metal and wood fininshes changing in the blink of an eye. The good news is, just like fashion styles, you don’t have to embrace every new trend that comes along.  The same way most women know what fashions look best on them, and change just a few accent pieces in their wardrobe to stay on trend, the same came be done in your home.
