How to Choose a Sofa

Finding Your Perfect Sofa

Most Americans spend a good portion of their free time relaxing on their sofa, whether they are talking with family and friends, watching television, playing video games or reading.

Finding just the right sofa for your living space is very important, and there are many factors that should be taken into account during this process. Just because a couch looks nice in a store does not necessarily mean it will look as good in your living room.

There are plenty of sofa styles, materials, sizes and colors to choose from, so knowing your preferences before you go shopping can save you time and maybe even money.

  • Size Matters – Before you even set foot out of your home, you will need to measure the space. Nothing is more disappointing than falling in love with a sofa, and finding out upon delivery that it won’t fit inside your house. (Yes! It happens!) Measure the walls, and mark the placement of doors, windows and outlets. Your sales associate can use this to create a functional floorplan to position your new sofa. Then take pictures of the room and existing pieces.
  • Orientation – Consider the function of the sofa. If you like to watch TV or movies, you will obviously want it to face the screen. If snuggling while listening to music is more your speed, you might prefer that your couch faces the fireplace. Afternoon reading might dictate placement below a window for optimal light. Often times the architecture of the room will limit your placement options as well.
  • Material – You want your sofa to look good, but how it feels when you are sitting is more important. Make sure you sit and lie down on prospective pieces before you purchase. Ask your salesperson about the quality of the frame construction. Fabric, too, can affect the functionality of a piece of furniture. For example, if you own pets or have small children, you may want to stay away from solid, light colored fabric, which can easily be stained. A darker, patterned fabric will do a much better job disguising stains. Ask your salesperson about the cleaning code of the fabric you’re considering. Some fabrics have special cleaning needs. It’s best to know this before you have a spill. Leather is a classic option that wears well with age and is not difficult to clean.
  • Style and Color – Try to find a sofa that complements your existing furniture and decor. The pictures you took of your room will make this much easier. Your sales associate can point you to styles and colors that will mesh with the pieces you are keeping. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Like your mom said, the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask. Our salespeople have a wealth of product knowledge, and may have an answer to a problem you thought couldn’t be solved.
